Few structures deserve the tribute more. Fourteen years in the building, the bridge opened in 1883 as the longest suspension span then on earth and the first hung from steel wire. The project consumed a family: designer John Roebling died of injuries before work even started, his son Washington was left disabled by caisson disease partway through, and Washington's wife Emily stepped in as field engineer to carry the job to completion.
