Foo Dog Charm Sterling Silver | Chinese Guardian Lion Jewelry | Made in USA
The Foo Dog — ancient China's mythical guardian lion — cast in solid .925 sterling silver and Made in USA through traditional lost-wax casting. At 3.8 grams, this 3D charm has genuine weight and presence.
The lost-wax casting process produces sculptural 3D depth that stamping and machine pressing cannot achieve. Each wax model is encased in investment plaster and burned out at 1,350 degrees. Molten sterling silver fills the mold at over 1,640 degrees, and a centrifugal caster applies roughly 50 G's of force to drive silver into every curled mane tendril and fierce expression. Each piece is then hand-finished to a mirror-bright polish.
Foo Dogs — more accurately called "shi" or guardian lions — have stood watch at the entrances of Chinese temples, palaces, and homes for over 2,000 years. They are believed to possess powerful protective energy, warding off negative forces and inviting prosperity. Traditionally displayed in pairs, the male rests his paw on a globe representing dominion over the world, while the female cradles a cub, symbolizing nurture and protection of the dwelling.
A meaningful gift for feng shui practitioners, Asian art collectors, anyone who values protective symbolism, or a thoughtful housewarming present. Wear on a charm bracelet, as a pendant, or pair two with ear wires. A sterling silver jump ring is included and attached.
