Lost-wax casting builds the seal in true relief rather than flat engraving, and each medal is finished by hand to a bright shine. It measures 5/8" by 1/2" and weighs a substantial 2.5 grams, enough heft to feel significant on a chain.
Luther unpacked the design himself in a letter that year: trust in the crucified Savior shown as a black cross, planted in a heart that stays alive and red, surrounded by a rose — white, for joy and comfort — and bound by a ring without end, for eternity.
