The wrapping pattern begins at the wax-carving stage: overlapping strips are carved in deliberate sequence so that when molten silver fills the mold under centrifugal force, each layer of bandage sits at a distinct depth from the others. Hand-polishing afterward brings the raised bandage surfaces to a bright finish while allowing the deeper grooves between strips to hold shadow — the same principle that makes bas-relief readable from a distance.
