After lost-wax casting, each piece is hand-filed with particular care around the angular jaw lines and scrollwork borders that define Mayan artistic style. The progressive polishing — tripoli, rouge, final buff — brings out the interplay of smooth surfaces and incised geometric patterns that characterize pre-Columbian metalwork.
This design is rooted in the iconography of Kukulkan — known as Quetzalcoatl to the Aztecs — the feathered serpent deity who represented wind, air, and learning. Ancient Mayan artisans carved his image into every major temple complex from Chichen Itza to Tikal. Wearing the serpent was believed to invite wisdom and good fortune.
