Lost-wax casting preserves the six Marines straining to raise the American flag atop Mount Suribachi in full three-dimensional relief. Hand-finishing through progressive polishing stages brings each figure, the flagpole, and the flag itself to a bright, detailed finish.
The photograph was taken on February 23, 1945, during one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific War. Three of the six men in the image did not survive the battle. The Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington was modeled on this moment. A sterling silver jump ring comes attached.
