The lost-wax method is a 6,500-year-old technique used by the goldsmiths of ancient Egypt and Greece. A hand-sculpted wax model is encased in investment plaster, burned out at 1,350 degrees, and replaced with molten sterling silver at over 1,640 degrees. The centrifugal caster generates approximately 50 G's of force, ensuring that liquid metal reaches every fine barb and quill of the wing feathers.

This hummingbird shows a slightly different pose from our other design — wings positioned at a different angle, body tilted as if darting toward a blossom. The long, slender beak and fanned tail feathers are rendered in crisp three-dimensional relief.
