Peruvian artisans build each bottle by hand and finish it with raku, the dramatic firing method in which a piece leaves the kiln red-hot and meets open flame and smoke. The treatment leaves a surface of smoke-darkened blacks, flashes of metallic luster, and a fine web of crackle that belongs to this bottle alone — the process cannot make the same piece twice.
