The lost-wax casting process dates back 6,500 years to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome — the same technique used to create this charm. After the wax is burned out at 1,350 degrees, molten sterling silver fills the mold under centrifugal force.

The dagger-and-serpent motif echoes the Rod of Asclepius and the caduceus — ancient symbols of medicine and Mercury, the Roman messenger god.
