Reproducing crossings this fine in metal takes force as well as heat. The charm is made by lost-wax casting, with silver melted past 1,640 degrees and driven into the mold by a centrifugal caster spinning at roughly 50 G's — enough pressure to fill every junction of the weave. Hand-polishing completes each one. The finished piece is dimensional rather than flat, 1-1/4" by 1", and 2.5 grams.
Knotwork of this kind flourished in Ireland, Scotland, and Northern England through the early Middle Ages, decorating manuscripts, metalwork, and carved stone alike.
